BB creams are HOT on the market. If you haven’t seen an ad for one then it’s safe to say you are blind. Or very busy. Anyway, due to the “one size fits all” appeal of the mysterious BB Cream, many people are confused about what exactly a BB cream is, does and who it’s for. Never fear, Sarah is here.
A little BB history!
Originally developed in Germany (ya!) in the 1960s (whoa we’re a bit late on the uptake here) by a dermatologist who was looking for a suitable post peel, laser and surgery ointment. The product remained relatively obscure until it was brought to South Korea and Japan in the 1980’s, where it became a must have beauty product. Weirdly enough it wasn’t until recently that it began selling like hotcakes in the U.S. Now BB creams have practically ‘esploded, creating lots of hype . . .they are simply all over the place and everyone is making one. Here is what the fuss is all about:
A BB Cream is an all-in-one treatment/moisturizer/makeup hybrid. It is meant to be soothing and ultra-nourishing while providing light, tinted, sheer-looking coverage for dark spots, acne and other facial blemishes. (Hence the name Blemish Balm a.k.a. BB) Variations usually include a good SPF, anti-aging and/or anti-inflammatory serums as well as light reflecting particles to make skin look smooth and flawless. Think of it as a bionic tinted moisturizer.
The key to applying a BB Cream is to do so SPARINGLY. Seriously, a pea-size amount is more than sufficient. Dot on the forehead, under-eyes, nose, chin and cheeks and blend (blend like mad!!) well into the skin for natural-looking coverage. BAM.
I’ve been playing around with several varieties and after taking color, SPF and viscosity (Mmmmm one of Auntie Sarah’s big, delicious words) into account, the following BB Creams are recommended:
Boscia BB Cream SPF 27 $38
Sarah gave this a thumbs up because: Natural color
This variety from Boscia is sheer, but gives great coverage. Plus, the color is warmer than some of the others, so you don’t need to worry about looking pasty, which was quite honestly a problem with many BB creams I tried.
Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 $39
Sarah gave this a thumbs up because: Hydration
This shimmery version is great for dry skin, will even out tone, give a youthful glow, and protect from the sun. Dehydrated skin will heart this.
*MY PROFESSIONAL AWESOME OPINION:
If your complexion is either combination or dry, without needing very heavy coverage, I say GO FOR IT! This product will give you all the benefits of a tinted moisturizer but with great SPF and slightly more coverage. Those with a little oil in the T-zone will want to consider powdering with a mineral product.
*MY PERSONAL AWESOME OPINION:
Personally, this is not the product for me. I found that I ended up tres greasy. Blech. T’was a sad time for everyone involved, except for Porter, who couldn’t stop licking it off my face. True story. So, in closing, if you are more on the oily side, stay away. Far, far away.
Alright, that’s all I’ve got. My knowledge base on the topic is spent. Go now, and experiement with your BB Creams. And for heaven’s sake don’t forget to be fabulous today!!
Have a Beautiful Day!!
